Night Time Driving
Driving at night is a different experience, whether it’s on a country road, a motorway or in a city - things can appear very different to how they would be during the day. To help shine some light on night driving:

  • Check all your lights are working properly (including your hazard lights) during the day, so you won’t get caught out in the dark.
  • If you feel tired while driving then stop and take a break. Stop in a safe place such as a lay-by or petrol station - not the hard shoulder on a motorway. Get out of the car and stretch your legs, take in some fresh air and drink a coffee or an energy drink and wait about 10 minutes for the drink to kick in.
  • If you’re feeling too tired then its best not to continue - don’t kid yourself into thinking you’ll be alright - just shutting your eyes for a second can cause a crash.
  • Keep an eye on your speed.  It’s better to drive at a speed where you can stop safely within the distance that you can see in your headlights.

Remember it can be more difficult to judge speed and distance at night - so take your time.
